BAG STYLES FOR GENTLEMEN

 

I believe you already know what a bag is but for the sake of more understanding, " a bag is a flexible container with an opening at the top, used for carrying different things."

Gentlemen bags can be used for carrying laptops, books, documents, files and folders, accessories, camera and/or clothes during travel. We gentlemen have different tastes and preferences which have pushed world renowned fashion gurus to come up with different bag styles to satisfy gentlemen.

Our mothers are right, we gentlemen need different type of man-bags just as they do. This depends on where you're going, what you're going to do, what you're transporting and who is going to see you on the way. You need a rotation which you can call a man-pulse collection if you must. With this in mind, here are different types/styles of today's gentlemen bags.

BRIEFCASE:

Is a bag generally used to carry business essentialslike paperwork(documement)  laptop, camera and other gears needed in daily office life. People working in law(lawyers), accounts(accountants), lecturers, as well as members of parliament prefer this bag style. Before it became briefcase,  it was called "budget". The size of the bag determines whether it is a briefcase or a suitcase.  A suitcase is larger than a briefcase.  A suitcase is more of a travel bag for an official travel, where you have a bag for both your laptop,  documents and clothes and other hygiene essentials. 

DUFFEL BAG:

Is a cylindrical shaped bag madeof natural fabric or synthetic or leather.  Mostly canvas is used in making duffle bags but to have a luscious touch, leather is also commonly used in making Duffel bags. Duffel bags are great for travel, gym, hiking and carrying gear. Most of them are spacious, lightweight and often made of durable materials like canvas, leather or ballistic nylon. Duffel bags aren't designed for daily use as when fully packed,  it's not easy to carry unless they have backpack straps  or wheels.  A Duffel bag is different from a weekender/gym bag since it's made from heavy materials like canvas and is larger than the weekender.

Duffel bags are often preferred on longer or camping trips out of town. 

BACKPACK:

Is a bag used to carry things on your back  used especially by people who go camping, walking,  jogging or college and school. There is no guide to the best bags for men  that is complete without mentioning the humble backpack.  Apart from the obvious advantage of keeping your hands free, backpacks also distribute weight evenly across your body,  which reduces physical strain.  The best backpacks are normally waterproof and contain a selection of item specific storage compartments. 

A key point of contention is wearing a backpack with a suit. Backpacks don't go well with a formal attire  and thus not the very best for office or some formal gatherings. They go well with the casual wear style  like a "t-shirt jeans, sneakers style ".

However, nowadays we have the smart backpacks for the business casual commuter.

TOTE BAG:

Is a bag with two long, parallel handles,  that allow it to be carried either by hand or on the  shoulder.  It was commonly produced using cotton or linen fabric  but nowadays, we even find leather tote bags in Tanzania. With a simple design and unfussy,  most tote bags have on compartment that gives easy access. As a general rule, a tote is a casual option, but leather totes are beginning to challenge this view. A zipper at the top offers extra security, while internal pockets ensure you don't have to go burrowing for your keys or coins. Don't discount a set of shoulder straps either. 

MESSENGER BAG:

Is a rectangular bag that is large enough to carry papers, books, ets, and that usually has a wide shoulder strap and a flap that typically covers the opening and much or whole of the front side of the bag. Messenger bags and satchels are both worn cross-body  but some crucial differences exists between them. 

Origin: Messenger bags originated from the horse mounted mail deliverers in the 19th century and later by masses of postal workers and couriers (hence the name).

While the satchels predates the messenger bag by millennial and was traditionally used to carry books - whether by monks or scholars in antiquity or European school boys in the middle Ages.

While both were designed to be worn on the shoulder, satchels rest on the hip and have a lengthier strap to accommodate for this. Messenger bags are intended to sit against the lower back  and consequently use shorter strap.

Due to their design, Messenger bags are particularly suited for cyclists and carrying office paraphernalia.  A satchel could equally be used for your daily commute,  and also handy for trips to your local coffee shop or bookstore. 

Elegant messenger or satchel bags can be a symbol for status when leather material is used.

CROSS-BODY: 

It's a bag with a strap worn diagonally across the body, with the bag hanging at the hip height on the opposite side or the belly.  The strap can be adjustable,  allowing you to wear at the desired height. 

WAIST BAG:

Also known as fany pack, belt bag, moon bag or belly bag. It's a small pouch worn like a belt around the waist by use of strap above the hips that is secured usually with some sort of buckle. 

They are very popular in the world of festivals and exhibition attendees as they allow them to carry their belongings like documents (identities and passports), cash, etc.

VINTAGE BAG:

Is a bag which has a design from the past era. That is either the bag was designed and made in the past years or that is made today but the design is copied from the past.

Leather is the king material for vintage bags as it has a sense of luxury  and is durable  when well stitched.
